It doesn’t seem to matter how big your house is you’ll always need extra storage space at some point!  If you don’t have a large closet or wardrobe then storing your clothes in a way that keeps them neat and tidy while at the same time being easy to access can be a problem. This is why a portable closet is a great short-term solution.

To begin with, what exactly is a portable closet? As the name suggests, it’s a type of storage unit that provides similar compartments to the average closet (i.e. shoe rack, clothes rail and shelves) but is portable. Until recently a portable closet was seen as a short-term solution to not having enough storage space but because the range of designs available has increased many people are starting to use them for long-term storage.

So what are the benefits of getting a portable clothes closet over a similar product such as a wardrobe? The main benefit is that they’re relatively cheap. For example you can buy a portable closet for around $50 online which is much less expensive than a wooden wardrobe closet. There are also plenty of different sizes and compartment combinations available so making portable closet storage a versatile option.

The downside to using a portable closet is that it takes up space in your room and in general they aren’t pleasing on the eye. While there are certainly many more options when it comes to the designs available today than in the recent past, if you’re worried about your rooms interior decor then getting a portable closet for the long term is probably not a good choice.

Remember, when buying a portable closet you need to make sure you get one that’s the right size for you and has the storage capabilities you need. For this reason think carefully about which items you want to store in the closet so you can choose one that has the correct compartments. Some closets will only come with enough space a clothes rail while others will include other compartments too.  You should also spend some time looking at the various colors and designs to work out which would suit your home the best.

Aside from being a place to hang your clothes there are plenty of other reasons you could buy a portable closet. For example, you could use one to hang wet washing or to store your selection of shoes. Because they’re so cheap and easy to move the range of possibilities is large.

Shelves come in a wide variety. Before settling on a specific type, you need to get an overview of all the options. Often picking one type is not ideal; instead you should go for a combination. Standard Shelves When referring to standard shelves, what is meant are shelves covering the entire piece of furniture. An example could be a standard bookcase. These kinds of shelves maximize storage capacity and are practical for storing large items. The downside is that they can look boring and monotonous. Cube Shelves Cube shelves can create an interesting break up of your furniture. Finding the perfect wardrobe storage solution can be tricky. There is a huge variety, which are good news as well as bad news. The good news is that you should be able to find a solution that is perfect for you; the bad news is that you will probably have to look through a lot of solutions that are not right for you. In this article a few pointers on how to find the right wardrobe closet will be explored.

Set a Price Limit

This might be a boring place to start, but you need to set a limit on how much you are willing to spend. It will, most likely, limit your choices. Wardrobe closets can be found cheap in IKEA, if you are willing to assemble it yourself, but you can also find fancy, giant, Italian walk-in closets beyond the budget of the vast majority of shoppers.

Keep the Surroundings in Mind

When you go to buy your wardrobe closet, don’t consider only how it looks in the store. You have to keep the bedroom where you will place it in mind. A modern, white, minimalistic closet in the store might look cool there, but if you have your bedroom decorated in an old-fashioned, richly decorated style, it just won’t fit.

What kinds of wardrobe storage you require, obviously, depend on your wardrobe. If you have a wide selection of dresses, you will most likely want to have a lot of room to hang them. However, guys without a lot of dress shirts might prefer the storage space mostly consisting of shelves. In general, you want a mix, but you should be aware of what the emphasis should be.

Price, General Theme, and Proper Storage

When picking out your closet, don’t spend more than what you can afford. Remember that the closet should fit with the general theme and color scheme of your home. Finally, make sure the closet contains the kind of wardrobe storage you require, you don’t want to install a fancy new closet, just to realize it in no way fits your wardrobe.

Most closet storage is very inefficient. When you open most closets, what do you generally see? Besides a mess. You will see a pole going from one side of the closet to the other. On top of that you will see a shelf that also runs from one side to the other. Plain and basic, but there are ways to increase your closet storage. Most shelves are unorganized. Most people just pile stuff up there hoping they know where it is and hope to find it when they need it. Often times its gets so unruly that when you go to look for something, a whole bunch of clothes and what not cascade down upon you. There must be a better way. With a little bit of planning and some basic skills, you can make your closet storage more efficient and easier to manage. There are several different closet shelving systems out on the market. What you want to find is one that offers the option to be able to adjust it. After installing it, you may find you want to change a few things around after using it. That is why an adjustable system is better. I prefer a wire closet shelf system that allows me to arrange the rods for clothes hangers as double deckers. This is where you see 1 rod above another in the closet. Arranging your rod like this uses your closet space better. No more large empty space under the clothes on a rod. Since you are using the double rods, you can now increase your shelf storage and make it more useable. Instead of having the one shelf that is always a bit to high to use, you now have shelves at eye level and easy to use. Don’t be scared off if you don’t think you are handy. If you read the reviews, it can be done in less than 2 hours. Set up is easy. You will need to plan ahead, but remember it is an adjustable system so you can change it if need be. Stop fumbling in your closet and get organized this year. A shoe storage bench is something I’ve come across recently at a friend’s house and fell in love with it. Let’s face it; shoes take up a lot of room in most closets. This can be in the hall closet, your bedroom closet and even the kid’s closets too. Most of the time they are just in a mess at the bottom of a closet. How many times have you found yourself wasting time looking for your shoes or only coming up with one? Here is something that can create more room for closet storage.

A shoe storage bench is a functional piece of furniture. It can be used in a hallway in a garage or placed at the foot of a bed. They have a plain look to them or can look like expensive furniture. The most practical way to use a shoe storage bench is to place it in the hall near the front door. What better place for it? The only items in the bench will be shoes, so there is no fighting over getting coats and shoes out of the closet with family members.

What to look for in a shoe storage bench.

Measure out the area first. This will insure you get the right one. Find a place where you plan on putting it. Mark it off on the floor with tape or a box to see if it is practical to be placed there. I know sounds weird, but its better to try it this way then to purchase and have to return it.

How many shoes will it hold? This of course will decide the size of your storage bench. Will you rotate seasonal shoes in and out of it? Will it only hold sneakers and boots? Maybe just dress shoes. Plan, and then act on it.

What style? There are many different styles to choose from. You can go with the simplicity of pine to richness of a fine wood. You will want to find something that matches the room it will be in. You will be able to find a wide variety of benches to select from.

Closet storage, its such a dream right? I love seeing closets on TV shows showing how clean and orderly they are. But we know the truth, don’t we? I know I have opened my closet and just feel overwhelm by the amount of stuff and clutter in there. It truly got out of hand.

After looking for my right sneaker amongst the mountain of boots, shoes and stuff it was time to get organized. No longer did I want to quickly shut the closet door after putting something in there in fear of the door not closing.

How to start to increase your closet space

Let’s start with the first closet you generally encounter. The entrance closet. That coat closet usually found near the front door. This closet does seem to become a catchall of stuff doesn’t it? This is where kids, husbands stuff seem to pile stuff up. Looking through mine I found shoes and sneakers that hadn’t been worn in years. And mind you it’s a small closet too!

The first thing you need to do is to de-clutter. What I did was to pull all of the shoes, boots, sandals, and sneakers out of the closet. I lined them up in the hall. I then had everyone throw out their footwear that is out of style, no longer fits, or shoes wouldn’t be caught dead in. This took all of 15 minutes, and for the first time in years I could see the bottom of the closet floor!

This was a great start. Next to tackle were the coats and jackets themselves. Here is another place where clutter just seems to grow. Once again I took everything out and put it in each persons pile. They then sorted through what still fits and what was in good condition. Anything that was still in good shape but unwanted was going to be donated.

That is something to consider too when cleaning out your closets. If the clothes and shoes you are getting rid of are still in decent condition, you may be able to donate it and get a tax write off for it! You may even be able to sell it on Ebay! Not only are you reclaiming closet space, you’re making a few dollars too!

Now after the coats and jackets have been cleared, the next step is the top shelf in the closet. This is usually filled with miscellaneous stuff like hats, gloves and whatnot. Once again pull it all out and sort. Toss or donate.

The shelf is where you can a bit creative. There are many closet storage solutions. What we did was get little bins labeled with our names. We use these bins to store our gloves hats and scarves. No more just randomly tossing them to the top of the closet to be lost and forgotten. By simply organizing that shelf with bins, you no longer have to hear a family member asking if you have seen their gloves

Another good way to increase your closet space is the use the back of the door. There are several door organizers that you can choose from. Most easily attach to the back of the door. You will find them useful for hats and gloves (so now you can use the shelf bins for other items) and also for footwear.

This may seem like a long drawn out project. Think of all the time you have wasted in the past trying to run out of the house only to be stopped by a search for something in the closet. By taking about an hour to de-clutter, toss and organize, you will find your closet cleaner and more manageable. Even better, you now have more closet storage!

Has anyone ever said they have too much bedroom closet space? This is the closet that might be the most abused one in the house. You mean well, but most people just keep stuffing things into the closet until it starts to spill over onto chairs and desks in a room. Come on, who hasn’t had some clothes hanging off a chair in the bedroom?

Going through your old wardrobe is like going down memory lane. You remember certain clothes you bought or events that you wore them to. But the sad fact is you don’t wear them any more or they’ve gone out of style or maybe they don’t fit anymore.

Time to say goodbye to them. The best thing to do is to take them all off the rod in the closet and lay them out on the floor and bed. Yes I know, what a pain, but by doing this you will be starting with a fresh canvas and will be better positioned to organize your clothes as you start to put them back.

After you have removed all of your clothes, now would be a great time to vacuum and really clean the closet. In fact you might even want to paint it now since it’s empty for the first time in years! Do a good cleaning. If you are going to paint, use a light color. This will add a bit of brightness to a dark closet. If you can, you might want to add some lighting to the closet. You will find articles on this site in the near future discussing closet lighting. But for now, go with a light color so it reflex light better and makes the closet more inviting.

So now it’s all clean and bright again, time to start moving your clothes back in. But before you start hanging clothes up, take a few minutes to formulate a plan. It doesn’t have to be elaborate, but figure out what will work best for you. If you and your husband share the closet, you should organize it where you have one side and he has the other.

One technique I have learned is to group my clothes by color. This way they are all in one section and it’s much easier when putting an outfit together.

Again if you haven’ worn it in ages, or hope to fit in it again, donate it! Don’t sweat fitting back in it. When the day comes that you can, you’re going to want something new and fresh to make you feel good wearing it, right? Donate it, sell it online or try selling it through a consignment shop. You are doing 2 things when you do this. Obviously you are creating more closet storage space, plus maybe making a few dollars for your next outfit. Plus if you do donate, you are not adding to the landfill and are helping people who are going through a tough time now. In addition you may qualify for a tax write off so you recover some money for your clothes.

Shoe organizers have been a godsend. After many years of just flinging shoes in the closet, using a shoe organizer is sooo helpful. It clears up a lot of room on the floor and makes life easier when shoes are together. Depending on your closet system, you can hang jackets and blouse on the top rod; skirts and pants on the second then place the shoe organizer underneath that.

Next is that top shelf. I bet you’re going to find things there you haven’t seen in years! Use the rule of if you haven’t used it/needed it in the last year TOSS IT! Yes you might be able to use it, but seriously, you haven’t, time for it to go.

Once again I love using small storage bins to store various things. You can use it for hats, glove or different accessories.
